New Features and Changes

• Protections Against Unauthorized Redistribution of Java Applications:
  Starting with 7u45, application developers can specify new JAR manifest file attributes:
  • Application-Name: This attribute provides a secure title for your RIA.
  • Caller-Allowable-Codebase: This attribute specifies the codebase/locations from which JavaScript is allowed to call Applet classes.
• JavaScript to Java calls will be allowed without any security dialog prompt only if::
  
  • JAR is signed by a trusted CA, has the Caller-Allowable-Codebase manifest entry and JavaScript runs on the domain that matches it.
  • JAR is unsigned and JavaScript calls happens from the same domain as the JAR location.
• The JavaScript to Java (LiveConnect) security dialog prompt is shown once per Applet classLoader instance.
• Application-Library-Allowable-Codebase: If the JNLP file or HTML page is in a different location than the JAR file, the Application-Library-Allowable-Codebase attribute identifies the locations from which your RIA can be expected to be started.
• If the attribute is not present or if the attribute and location do not match, then the location of the JNLP file or HTML page is displayed in the security prompt shown to the user.
• Note that the RIA can still be started in any of the above cases.


• Restore Security Prompts


• A new button is available in the Java Control Panel (JCP) to clear previously remembered trust decisions. A trust decision occurs when the user has selected the Do not show this again option in a security prompt. To show prompts that were previously hidden, click Restore Security Prompts. When asked to confirm the selection, click Restore All. The next time an application is started, the security prompt for that application is shown.

JAXP Changes
• Starting from JDK 7u45, the following new processing limits are added to the JAXP FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING feature.


• totalEntitySizeLimit
• maxGeneralEntitySizeLimit
• maxParameterEntitySizeLimit

TimeZone.setDefault Change

• The java.util.TimeZone.setDefault(TimeZone) method has been changed to throw a SecurityException if the method is called by any code with which the security manager's checkPermission call denies PropertyPermission("user.timezone", "write"). The new system property jdk.util.TimeZone.allowSetDefault (a boolean) is provided so that the compatible behavior can be enabled. The property will be evaluated only once when the java.util.TimeZone class is loaded and initialized.

What's the top media player? Opinions differ, but if you mean one that's open-source freeware, plays more files than the others, can be totally customized and configured to suit, and is not only updated frequently but also regularly offers new features and options created by a huge community of programmers and users, the answer is VLC Media Player.

Our default media player for years, VLC has managed to stay ahead of the competition in features and performance, if not always looks, though that's easy enough to fix if you want to. VLC and its source code are maintained by the all-volunteer VideoLAN Organization.

VLC is quick and easy to install. You can make VLC your default media player for various (or all) file types, but if you just want to try VLC without giving up your current player, you can skip the file associations. We clicked the familiar orange-and-white traffic cone icon to open VLC's famously plain interface, which is also a model of efficient layout design (and completely customizable, in any case: clicking the skinned player option in VideoLAN's Start Menu folder opens VLC in a sleek new view).

Effects? VLC has 'em: Audio, Video, and Synchronization effects, including a graphic equalizer with many presets; totally customizable dynamic range compression; an audio spatializer tool; AtmoLight video effects; interactive zoom; logos and overlays; and even special effects like blur, wave, water, and mirror effects. VLC's minimized interface hides the player's controls until you need them, and a raft of hot keys make it easy to toggle between views and to quickly access any of VLC's features. Playback quality is as good as it gets. We've used VLC to play MP3s, WAVs, CDs, DVDs, Flash video, and other formats. As for support, few programs of any sort can match VLC's Help files and wikis, and its dedicated community of users, forums and other online resources.

From myriad file types to playlists to codecs and video capture, if it's useful to have in a media player, VLC has probably got it or soon will. VLC plays everything: if there's a media file it can't play but should, just ask!

KMPlayer

KMPlayer is all in one media player, covering various formats such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg Theora, OGM, 3GP, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, QuickTime. 1Mobile Market

The 1Mobile Market for Android offers a curated selection of fun, useful, and otherwise interesting apps, all of which are free. It's unique because it's managed by a team of actual editors, rather than a set of algorithms that try to home in on what you're looking for.

First thing you'll notice is that 1Mobile's main panel looks a bit like a cheap knock-off of Google Play, with its large tiles and similar color scheme. For some, this might be comforting, but for me, it feels a little tacky.

While looks may not be 1Mobile's strong suit, the app does offer tons of value in other ways. It's a lot more manageable (size-wise) than Google Play, and it offers a number of useful tools to find the apps you're looking for.

Swipe left from the main panel, and you'll see a list of categories for a typical browsing experience. Swipe right to see Top apps, AppLists, and Editor's Picks. AppLists are uniquely helpful, in that they group apps based on specific interests. For instance, there are lists for Fitness fiends, vegetarians, movie lovers, bookworms, and so on. These groupings are one good reason to check 1Mobile before going straight to Google Play.

Another way to find apps on 1Mobile Market is through Search. If you do a typical keyword search, 1Mobile will attempt to autocomplete your terms, which can be very helpful. Also, there's a unique (thought not necessarily useful) keyword cloud that offers handfuls of typical search terms for you to try.

It's important to note that you don't actually download any apps directly from 1Mobile. Rather, each product page just features a link, which leads directly to the download page on Google Play. Also, on the product page you can Like or Dislike an app, see all its vitals, and view screenshots.

One thing to watch out for with 1Mobile is invalid links. Since the whole market is curated by editors, sometimes a recommendation can lead to a page that no longer exists on Google Play. This happened to me when I came across a recommendation for the classic NES game Contra. Seeing a link to one of my all-time favorite shoot-'em-up games got my hopes high, but clicking through to a nonexistent download page quickly grounded them. The game was no doubt pulled for copyright infringement issues, but 1Mobile's editors had yet to update their database.

Overall, I think 1Mobile Market is an outstanding tool for sifting through what might otherwise be an overwhelming Google Play store. It offered me a lot of great recommendations for apps that I likely wouldn't have found otherwise.
